THE SWORD OF LIGHT PIPE BAND
THE PIPES AND DRUMS OF LOCAL UNION # 3, I.B.E.W.
P.O.BOX 656503 FRESH MEADOWS, NEW YORK 11365-6503
Dear Members and Supporters,
On behalf of the Officers of The Sword of Light Band, I want to thank you for your help and support during the 2011 season. The band had a busy year that extended into the fall and winter months.
The bands performance inluded Parades, Weddings, Street Fairs, College Graduations, Church Carnivals, Communion Breakfast, Special Olympic Events, ALS Fundraisers (Loug Gehrig Disease), 911tributes, and Union Picnics, culminating in out trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where we performed at the Vancouver Convention Center for the I.B.E.W. Convention.
In September, the band held its General Election and we have a new slate of Officers that will serve for the next two years. The new Officers include me, Colin Smith - President, Daniel Manning - Treasurer, William Manning - Pipe Major, and Dennis Scanlon - Drum Sergeant. These new Officers have been active members of The Sword of Light Pipe Band for many years. We believe we are a good fit for our respective offices.
I would like to thank outgoing President Paul Moquin for his four year tenure as President and for the help and guidance he has given me while I was Treasurer. He will continue to be an asset to the band and a valuable member. I also want to thank Daniel Manning and Carl Vanderwerff for their 4 and 2 years of service respectively, as Pipe Major and Drum Sergeant. They led the band with distinction and they both deserve our thanks.
It is impossible to predict what awaits the band in the years to come. We were unfortunate to lose our long time Drum Major and friend Jimmy Conway. He passed away in the spring. Jimmy Conway was an original member of The Sword of Light and was a mentor and friend to many of us. He will be missed and always remembered for his leadership and guidance to our organization.
As the new President, I will endeavor to move The Sword of Light forward with the same kind of integrity and energy that has been the hallmark of all of our past Officers.
In the year 2013, The Sword of Light Pipe Band will celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Our plans for the dinner dance are already under way and the event will celebrate the history of The Sword of Light and its service to Local Union #3, I.B.E.W.
In closing, the Officers and Members want to thank all of our fiends and families for their continued encouragement and support.
Trust me, the best is yet to come!
